Nils Hansen is the owner of the bicycle shop Woodstock Cycleworks in Cape Town. For Nils, the essence of life revolves around celebrating things from the past with a deep-rooted love for restoration and the upkeep of vintage bicycles. As a devoted collector, Nils finds joy in the narratives woven into old bicycles, cars, art, and unique artefacts. His world is a fusion of history and craftsmanship, where functionality and exquisite design unite. “Things that have a story to tell, I am naturally drawn to” he explains.

We join Nils in his workshop, home, on a mountain bike and road cycle as well as cruising through Cape Town in his Porsche 924 Turbo, and talk to him about his love for collecting and fixing things. For Nils, this is a lifelong love affair with objects that whisper stories of bygone eras. “There isn’t really anything I haven’t collected I think for such a young person”, says Nils. Since he was a small child, he developed a love for objects. Things with known and unknown stories. Growing up he was surrounded by collectors, artists, designers, and photographers. “They taught me lessons about how simply made objects show creative ability”, says Nils.

“I really learned to love how things have been made in the past and how they continue to be loved into the future. That’s what I really enjoy about stuff like this.” Nils says while talking about the now and then.

Transitioning from his beloved Volkswagens (especially Golf Mk 1s and MK 2s) to a Porsche 924, Nils found himself drawn to classic cars when others were chasing the latest models. He wanted something special, something to challenge him. His Porsche became a canvas for learning and creativity, a testament to his passion for fixing and restoring.

For the untrained eye, it might look like one G-Class. But take a closer look, there are two: one is from 1986, and the other is the 500,000th G-Class ever built, 37 years later. After our shoot, this milestone vehicle went straight to the Mercedes-Benz Museum. Shot for Mercedes-Benz.
