With these hands / editorial shot for Highlife, British Airways inflight magazine

{editorial} ‘With these hands’ is an editorial in the current High Life (British Airways inflight magazine) on people working with their hands and their true craftsmanship. We photographed Megan Miller and the makers of Nette Rose lingerie, the distiller Eugene Coertzen of Brickmakers Distillery, Dylan Lewis’ sculptures and shoe maker S’bosh Mnikina – words by Nick Dall.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class / shot for Highlife, British Airways inflight magazine

{commercial / editorial} We loved driving and shooting the new Mercedes-Benz C-class for the latest High Life, the British Airways inflight magazine. Pick up a copy on-board or in an airport lounge. It’s a top notch mag!

Bottlenose dolphin capital of the world, Port Elizabeth / shot for Highlife, British Airways inflight magazine

{editorial} Port Elizabeth has a reputation as the ‘bottlenose dolphin capital of the world’, but few people know that Algoa Bay is home to half the global population of African penguins as well as the world’s largest colony of gannets – some 200,000 individuals on one tiny island. The bay also harbours two other dolphin species and a host of resident and visiting whales, seals, sharks and fish. Nick Dall and I got salty with some of the scientists and tour operators who are committed to ensuring this decidedly urban marine gem remains as sparkly as ever. DNA – Desmond (with fabulous words by Nick Dall)

Dudley Nkosi / HFR Refrigerated for Scania Legend Magazine

{editorial} With 235 trucks, HFR Transport is one of the largest independent hauling companies in South Africa. Every day its drivers transport time-sensitive loads across this huge country and beyond. Dudley Nkosi, one of HFR’s “road jockeys”, takes great pride in his work. We got to meet and photograph him with his truck for the Scania Legend Magazine.

Rush Sports CycloPlus Dealer Tour #1 / South Africa

{editorial} Bicycles, bicycles, bicycles… for Rush Sports we documented bike shops all over the Western Cape (often in the middle of nowhere). We got into a van full of camera kit, baseball caps and t-shirts to give away. Every time we saw a cyclist, we stopped, took a portrait and gave him or her some freebies. It was so awesome to make these guys so happy and all it took was a cap or a shirt. Our country is full of amazing people. Have a look at the full Rush Sports CycloPlus Dealer Tour here.

Porsche GT2RS / shot for TopGear South Africa [July 2018]

{editorial} We shot the fastest production car ever made (if you use the Nürburgring as a benchmark) for TopGear South Africa. The rain came down in buckets and we love the dramatic effect it gave the pictures! We blasted through Franchhoek towards Stanford, then back to Cape Town via Kleinmond. I have never ever felt so much power on four wheels, unreal. The new GT2RS makes mince meat out of ALL the supercars and hypercars ever made. DNA – Desmond

Suzaan and Chris Alheit / shot for Ozy.com / Alheit Vineyards, Hemel & Aarde Ridge, Walker Bay / South Africa

{editorial} We spent some time with Chris and Suzaan from Alheit Vineyards in the Hemel and Aarde Valley. The goal was to capture some portraits of them for online magazine Ozy.com. What a lovely couple making exceptionally good wine. Read the article here.

First Ascent / winter collection 2018 / shot in Cape Town, South Africa

{commercial} First Ascent‘s new winter range was launched last week! It was super fun shooting this campaign with an awesome crew a few weeks back at the height of summer. We thought the heat would be challenging for our models wearing the warm jackets and shirts… but as we arrived on location, the clouds rolled in and the Cape Town drought was no more for about an hour. We could not believe our luck. We had real rain for the new rain jackets ;).  Thanks to everyone involved, we had loads of fun! DNA

Port Elizabeth / shot for Highlife, British Airways inflight magazine

{editorial} When High Life asked Nick and myself to document PE, I was a bit nervous and excited at the same time. Nervous because I’m not familiar with PE and when I asked someone that day what he thinks about PE he replied “Well at least its close to J-Bay”. But exactly this made me excited! I knew that Nick (who always gets the best out of a situation and out of people) and myself will rock it and that we will show to everyone that PE is cool. We did just that!

Ever since I have been back to PE twice for various other jobs. I have met amazing people and kinda feel like a local in the Baakens Valley, the place where you get very good food, beer and of course coffee. So PE’s culture is growing enormously, especially amongst the youth. The youth that always moved to Joburg and Cape Town after school are staying and making awesome things. And yes, J-Bay is around the corner, extra brownie points! DNA – Desmond

Rush Sports / #WeRide kit / shot in Cape Town, South Africa

{commercial} Rush Sports got a new #WeRide kit, so we went up the mountain with coffee and a camera. There is nothing better than sunrise shoots and good vibes. Thanks to Oli for such a fun morning! Rush Sports is South Africa’s importer of Santa Cruz bicycles, Maxxis tyres, Onza tyres and many other brands.

Garden Route Trail Park Knysna / WOW Ride / shot for Bicycling Magazine

{editorial} At the end of last year I went to the Garden Route Trail Park in Knysna for the WOW ride series for Bicycling magazine. Flowy trails, good coffee and good vibes! What a lovely place. Fun exploring this awesome park with Neill Ungerer (Lapierre ambassador). Cheers, DNA – Desmond

Sun Met 2018 / 27 January 2018 / Cape Town, South Africa

{documentary} Heat, wind, fashion… oh, and horses 😉 – awesome to be part of the Sun Met 2018. Thanks to MobileMediaMob for another sweet gig.

DNA WOR{KING} X Business Day Wanted collaboration

{editorial} Our project WOR{KING} kicked off in February 2014. We just kept on meeting more and more people with awesome wheels (cars, of course, but also motorcycles and bicycles) and their stories and we had to do something with them. For us it was only natural to shoot them plus to do a little interview.
The history of the vehicle and the memories associated with it are usually about more than just the ‘drive’. South Africa and Germany, where most of the content was gathered, have an incredible car culture. The content features various characters and stories: A son who buys his dad his lifelong favorite car, a family that has owned ten Volkswagen Beetles, with which they managed to conquer difficult 4×4 only passes. A father and son who have restored a Boss Mustang for the duration of eleven years. A filmmaker who loves his narrow car and hopes it never becomes trendy…
The people included in this book are a few that we have met on our travels in South Africa, USA, Portugal, Germany and Thailand.
